Exploring the Estate

Embarking on a tour of our estate, visitors are invited to delve into the rich history of our vineyard and discover the secrets of our winemaking process with the guidance of our multilingual tour guides. Speaking Hungarian, English, French, and German, our guides offer a truly international experience.

Lasting between 1-1.5 hours, the tour begins at the Wine Boutique, located behind the Sárga Borház (Yellow Wine House) Restaurant. Following the same path the grapes take to produce our fine wines, visitors are taken on an immersive journey. The tour’s first stop is the Filagória, a picturesque lookout point that has become an emblem of the estate since its construction in the mid-19th century. Built next to the Disznókő rock, which resembles a wild boar’s head, it took on this name.

From this vantage point, visitors are treated to breathtaking views of the surrounding wine region. This provides an excellent opportunity to showcase the estate’s geographical location as well as its blend of historic and modern architecture. The Tokaj wine region, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002, unfolds in all directions. Guests can appreciate the dimensions of the area while taking in views of the Tokaj Mountain peak, the Great Hungarian Plain, and the neighboring vineyards. The renovated stone terraces of the estate also add to the beauty of the surroundings.

The Yellow Wine House, the oldest building on the estate, and the baroque-style guard tower can be seen from the Filagória, as can our iconic tractor garage. Inspired by the shape of yurts and volcanoes that fuel our wines’ „fire”.

Estate with Exceptional Architecture

As the tour continues, visitors arrive at the Estate Center, featuring the Winery designed by Ekler Dezső, a Ybl Prize-winning architect. Considered one of the world’s most beautiful wineries, it draws inspiration from traditional Tokaj wine cellars. The Winery’s uniqueness lies in its use of natural materials, forms, and light, as well as the grape movement by gravity.

The three levels of the building symbolize the three stages of winemaking. On the ground floor, the grapes arrive at the reception, and through gravity, they reach the presses. The must then collects in tanks on the middle level, where fermentation occurs. Finally, the wine is aged in barrels stored deep in the cellar.

After the visitors see the reception cellar, they will learn about the history of Tokaj winemaking, the characteristics of the grape varieties grown on the estate, the unique features of Tokaj harvests, and the secrets of making aszú, in a presentation held in the event hall. Among other things, they will discover the differences between szamorodni, aszú, and eszencia.

The tour then proceeds to the bottling plant, finished goods warehouse, presses, and laboratory, where they witness sample preparation and sugar level measurement. Visitors can also see the 100-150 hectoliter fermentation tanks equipped with cooling/heating spirals.

Treasures Underground: Liquid Gold

The „golden corridor” is home to 100 000 bottles of wine

The lowest level of the building, 10-15 meters below ground level, houses our cellar branches carved into the rhyolite bedrock. To ensure secure wine storage, the branches are fully paved. The constant temperature of around 12°C and humidity of 90-95%, along with the fine black mold layer (Cladosporium cellare, also known as Zasmidium cellare) covering the walls, create the perfect environment for our aszú to age for many years in over a thousand oak barrels.

Adjacent to the main branch is the bottle cellar. Walking along the „golden corridor” lined with more than 100,000 bottles of our golden-colored wine undergoing bottle aging, visitors experience an incredible sensation. The corridor ends with storage alcoves for the unique glass balloon bottles filled with essences.

Wine boutique

Wine tasting in the historic cellar

The historic Wine Boutique, located in a classicist-style monument building constructed by Count Menyhért Lónyay – who later became the Prime Minister – on the grounds of an ancient press house dating back to the era of the Rákóczis, is now home to one of the region’s most renowned restaurants, Sárga Borház. This esteemed restaurant boasts an impressive wine list featuring a plethora of thrilling options from Hungary’s top wineries, as well as soon-to-be-available wines from French and Portuguese estates owned by AXA Millésimes (Château Pichon-Baron, Suduiraut, and Quinta do Noval).

The Wine Boutique is the perfect starting point for your visit, where you can indulge in a 3- or 6-wine flight in the historic cellar located beneath the original press house, complementing the overall experience. Since 1992, the Wine Boutique has been showcasing all of Disznókő’s bottled wines, as well as books on the Tokaj wine region and its wines. Our guests can not only taste our fresh, fruity, and aromatic wines but also seek advice on selecting wines based on their personal preferences.
